Celebrity marriages often scoff-worthy, but still contain lessons

On Behalf of | Aug 27, 2012 | Firm News

Texas residents who follow entertainment news may be used to enjoying a good laugh over the revolving-door relationships of movie stars, singers and professional athletes. It can be hard to take a celebrity marriage seriously considering how many of them expire faster than the items in our refrigerator.

One marital problem that should never be joked about, however, is domestic abuse. That’s the apparent reason behind one of the latest celebrity divorces, which comes less than two months after the couple exchanged their vows. NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson and reality TV star Evelyn Lozada announced they’re parting ways after an incident in which Johnson was arrested and accused of head-butting his wife. Lozada filed for divorce a few days later.

Police in Davie, Florida, were called to the couple’s home after an argument in which Lozada accused Johnson of infidelity. The couple had been out to dinner and continued arguing on the way home, with the fight culminating in their driveway, police said. A neighbor who called 911 to report the incident said that Lozada was bleeding and would probably need stitches.

Although Johnson says it was Lozada who head-butted him, his wife has said Johnson is refusing to account for his actions and is ready to move on with her life without him. In a prepared statement about the split, she said that domestic violence “is not okay” and hoped that her taking a stand would encourage other women to break their own silence.

Lozada, who appeared in the VH1 reality series “Basketball Wives,” and Johnson, formerly known as Chad Ochocinco, were married July 4. It’s unfortunate that yet another celebrity marriage is breaking records for its brevity, but domestic abuse affects marriages of all sorts, and is nothing to scoff at. People victimized by domestic abuse need to get legal, psychological and medical help immediately, without any fear of how others will view their marital problems.
