Swimming pool accident re-ignites Usher’s child custody battle

On Behalf of | Aug 7, 2013 | Firm News

Texas residents who follow celebrity news may remember that Usher and his ex-wife, Tameka Foster, had a very contentious split in 2009. There was little that the two could agree upon and it took a long time to resolve the property division and child custody elements of their divorce. Ultimately, Usher was awarded full physical custody of their son, who is now 5 years old.

Recently, their son, Usher Raymond V, was involved in an accident. That prompted Foster to seek custody of the little boy, possibly reigniting a dispute that Usher may have thought was settled.

On Monday, Usher Raymond V fell into a swimming pool at an Atlanta home. Accounts of how that happened and what unfolded subsquently differ, but the boy was eventually rescued and taken to a hospital. At this point, it appears his injuries will not have any long-term effects.

Usher was not on the scene at the time, and it is not clear that the accident even happened at his residence.

Nonetheless, Foster filed paperwork accusing Usher of providing a “dangerous home environment” and asking a court for custody.

It remains to be seen whether Foster’s filing will have any effect. This story does provide an example, however, of how some child custody disputes can be lengthy and tumultuous affairs. Parents care deeply about their children, of course, and so have a strong motivation to do what they can to secure more time with them. One way to represent your interests is to work with an attorney who has experience in child custody cases.
