3 ways to get through the holidays after a divorce

Next week, families across Texas will be gathering for Thanksgiving and will also start to make plans for other upcoming holidays and parties. It can certainly be very difficult for people who are in the middle of or still recovering from a divorce. For many people, it may be the first time in years that the holidays are not so happy.

However, it is important for people to remember that this phase is temporary and many people have been in a similar position before. Those who have been there before likely know how difficult it can be to get through the holidays when a family is adjusting to such a significant change, but there are ways for a person to approach this challenging time with a new perspective and a few tips.

  • Try not to focus on the past: Of course this may be easier said than done, but during the holidays, people should try to avoid dwelling on past events and the emotions tied to an ex. There is nothing that can be done about the past, so people should try not to let it ruin this and future holidays. If you are feeling reflective, try to instead focus on what you are thankful for rather than what you may regret.
  • Stay in the present: This season may be difficult, but it is also a great time to start enjoying the new opportunities that may be available. Instead of trying to keep others happy, a person can focus on doing only the things that he or she enjoys. Volunteer, spend time with friends, start your holiday shopping or spend some time focusing on yourself.
  • Look forward to the future: While it may seem impossible, focusing on the future can be very helpful during the holidays. New traditions can start this year that will go on many years from now. Making plans with friends or family members in the coming weeks and months can also be very beneficial. It may even be a good time to start thinking about or planning a vacation to look forward to.

The holidays can be very hard on divorced or divorcing couples in Texas. But hopefully these tips can help people gain a new perspective and take a different approach to getting through the holidays with less stress and anxiety.
