Dennis Quaid’s wife files for divorce in Texas

The third time was apparently not the charm for actor Dennis Quaid, whose wife has filed a divorce petition in Travis County, Texas. She said their marriage had “become insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities.”

So far there doesn’t appear to be much of a battle over property division or the couple’s children. According to publicists for the actor, a satisfactory settlement is being worked out for the couple, who have homes in Austin, Texas. Quaid’s wife is seeking spousal support and attorney fees.

Court documents say the two will enter into a written agreement providing for child custody, visitation and support of their 4-year-old twins. According to a temporary order agreed upon by both parties March 2, Quaid’s wife will be allowed to use a home in Austin and a Mercedes, and Quaid will remain at another home nearby and keep the couple’s Cadillac Escalade. They plan to share a Range Rover his wife already has.

The couple’s willingness to come to an agreement on the division of their property and time with their children doesn’t make for the kind of juicy Hollywood gossip that entertainment news outlets thrive on, but that isn’t a bad thing. Although contested divorces are common among celebrities and the rest of us, it’s always fortunate when a couple can agree on how to divide their lives and move on, particularly if they don’t want a public battle that can be twisted into a tabloid scandal.

Both spouses are from Texas. Quaid is a Houston native, and his wife was working as a real estate agent in Austin when she met the actor. This was his third marriage. He married actress P.J. Soles in 1978 and they divorced in 1983. He married actress Meg Ryan in 1991, but their marriage ended in divorce in 2001.
