Cox, Arquette divorce, making it official

Sometimes when celebrities split up, they end up reconciling later or calling off a divorce. They struggle with making the right decision just like everyone else, and sometimes divorces don’t actually happen until years after a breakup.

A perfect example this week is Courteney Cox and David Arquette. The couple announced back in October 2010 that they were splitting up. At the time, they said the reason was “to better understand ourselves and the qualities we need for a partner and in our marriage.”

Since then the couple has remained friendly, and at times it appeared they might reconcile. But this week, Arquette formally filed divorce papers, ironically on what would have been the couple’s 13th anniversary. Cox filed papers at around the same time. Both cited “irreconcilable differences.”

The couple, who met and worked together on the “Scream” film franchise before marrying in 1999, said as late as 2009 that divorce wouldn’t ever be an option for them. It seems that they didn’t expect their marriage to end, but couples rarely do. Relationships evolve over time. People change.

Cox, who not surprisingly is dropping Arquette from her name, still works with her ex on the comedy “Cougar Town,” which they both executive produce. The series was recently cancelled by ABC but will live on at its new home on the cable network TBS.

Cox and Arquette have an 8-year-old daughter. They are both seeking joint and legal physical custody.
